Common Types of Copper Piping

Types of Copper Piping

Thanks to their excellent resistance to corrosion and thermal performance, copper pipes are used for various applications around the home, such as for refrigerant lines in HVAC systems. There are different types of copper piping, each ideally suited for specific uses. Here are the most common types:

Type K

Type K is the thickest copper piping and is therefore used in fire protection, HVAC, and water distribution systems. Its thickness makes it ideal for underground applications because it’s strong enough to withstand the weight of backfilled earth. Type K copper piping is typically used with flared and compression fittings.

Type L

Often used for interior plumbing, Type L copper pipes are the most common in the industry, and are often used for repairing or replacing deteriorating water lines. They can be used with sweat, flare, and compression fittings, and are strong enough for exterior applications where they’ll be exposed to the elements.

Type M

Type M copper piping is thinner than Type K and Type L, making it a less expensive option. Due to its lower price, Type M copper piping is a favorite for residential water and vacuum systems, and it can be used with flare, compression, and sweat fittings. However, unlike the previous types, Type M is not a universally accepted material. It’s essential to check with local plumbing codes to see if this type of copper pipe is allowed for a particular project.

Type DWV

Drain-waste-vent, or DWV, copper piping is a material found in older homes for above-ground applications. It is no longer used in the industry and is typically replaced in older homes with modern PVC piping.
