What Is the Difference Between a Diverter Valve & Transfer Valve?

graphic of interior of diverter valveDiverter valves and transfer valves, both commonly found in residential shower systems, are designed to manage the flow of water. The key difference between the two is how they direct the water flowing through the pipe. Here’s how they differ in functionality:

Diverter Valves

Diverter valves can channel the flow of water in different directions. For instance, when you turn the handle on your shower system to switch the bathtub faucet off and the showerhead on, a diverter valve is responsible for redirecting the water.

Transfer Valves

Transfer valves have a similar function, but they allow water to flow in more than one direction. As an example, some modern showers have two showerheads—one stationary and one handheld. A transfer valve allows water to flow through both showerheads simultaneously.
