Do Ball Valves Have a Flow Direction?

Do Ball Valves Have a Flow Direction?

Though ball valves come in all shapes and sizes to accommodate countless applications, they all have the same basic design involving an interior ball that is perforated. The perforation allows liquid to flow through the valve. When the ball is rotated shut, the perforation is blocked and flow is impeded. Flow direction can be bidirectional or unidirectional, depending on how the ball valve is designed.

Bidirectional Ball Valves

Most ball valves are bidirectional and feature two fixed or floating seats on the upstream and downstream sides of the valve. The double-seated ball valve creates a tight seal when closed with minimal pressure drop.

Unidirectional Ball Valves

Unidirectional ball valves allow liquid to flow in only one direction. Typically, the outside of the valve will be marked with an arrow showing the direction of flow. Inside the valve, there is only one seat. Common types of unidirectional ball valves include C ball valves, V port ball valves, and orbit ball valves.
