What Is a Butterfly Valve Used For?

What Is a Butterfly Valve Used For

Butterfly valves regulate flow through a pipe system via an internal disc that rotates open and closed. Operation is easy and requires only a 90-degree turn of the handle to move the disc. Butterfly valves come in many sizes and are used in a range of applications. Compared to other types of valves, like globe, ball, and gate valves, butterfly valves weigh less, take up less space, and typically cost less.

Butterfly Valve Applications

Two of the most common applications for butterfly valves are moving low-pressure liquids and gasses, and liquids with a high concentration of solid matter (slurries). They are used in piping systems in many different industries, including oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, waste management, and others. Examples of materials that can flow through a system regulated by butterfly valves include cooling water and gas, high-temperature steam, wastewater, and natural gas.
