What Is the Difference Between L & M Copper Pipe?

Difference Between L & M Copper Pipe Copper pipes are used in both residential and commercial buildings for plumbing and gas. Types L and M are the most common. If you were to hold one of each in your hands, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference, as they look identical. So, how are they different? Type L has a thicker wall than M and, therefore, is durable enough to handle higher pressures. Let’s take a closer look at how each is used.

Type L Copper Pipe

Because the walls of a type L copper pipe are thick, this type is typically used in high-pressure systems, like commercial plumbing, water heaters, and gas lines. It is also ideal for moving highly acidic water and for underground applications.

Type M Copper Pipe

Type M copper pipe has a thinner wall (and a lower price tag) than type L and is suitable for general in-wall plumbing of residential dwellings. The same tools can be used to cut both types, and the same fittings can connect the segments.
